John Cooney

St. Marys-John C. Cooney, 53, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016 in an automobile accident on I-335 south of Topeka. He was born July 20, 1962 at Vernon, CT, the son of George and Jandira Correia Cooney. He had lived in the St. Marys community for many years. John was a painter and owned St. Marys Painting Company. He was a member of Assumption Chapel in St. Marys. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Juana. On July 9, 1988 he was united in marriage to Sylvia Maze in St. Marys. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, Sarah, David, Rose, Clare, Bridget, Mary, Anne, Rita and Helen; 6 brothers, George, Jose, Jerry, Frank, Jim (his twin), and Napoleon; 4 sisters, Veronica, Anna, Isabel and Jandira; 12 grandchildren, Olivia, Gabby, Bella, Lydia, Natalia, Seamus, Timothy, Byron, Anastasia, Samuel, Joan and Lula. Requiem Mass will be at 7:00 A.M, Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Assumption Chapel in St. Marys. Interment will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Marys. Mr. Cooney will lie in state from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. A rosary will be recited at 5:20 P.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Assumption Chapel.
