Kurt Heinz Mielenz, 92, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2023.
Kurt was born on May 4, 1931 to Anna Slaweck in Berlin, Germany. He had a rough childhood growing up during World War II. After completing school he became an apprentice learning the trade of working with wrought iron and welding (pictures of his work are at the bottom).
In 1951, Kurt met Hannelore through mutual friends in Berlin. In 1952, they got married and the following year they welcomed Barbel to their lives. In 1957, the young family was sponsored by Willard Balderson and a local church which enabled them to move to the United States of America. They came to Wamego, Kansas and he worked for Balderson Inc. as a welder building snow plows. In 1959, Mike was born and then the family moved to Topeka, KS and he joined the Sheet Metal Union in Topeka. In 1963, they bought a new home in south Topeka. Kurt traveled all over the United States of America installing sheet metal kitchens for restaurants, hospitals, and churches being employed by Stevenson Sheet Metal Company. Tony was born in 1970. The family frequently traveled to Germany to visit relatives.
In 1993, Kurt retired and enjoyed spending time with family, hunting, playing cards, board games, and events with the German/ American Club of Topeka. He enjoyed traveling with family around the United States and in Europe.
He is survived by his wife Hannelore Mielenz (Topeka), daughter Barbel and husband Randy Baker (Hawkins, TX), son Mike and wife Kim Mielenz (Basehor), and son Tony Mielenz (Topeka); brother Wolfgang and wife Conny Mielenz (Berlin, Germany), and other cousins in (Berlin, Germany). Two grandchildren; Stuart Baker (Federal Way, WA) and Kallahan Mielenz (Topeka)
