Martina Edna Hiegert, 88, of Paxico, Kansas passed away December 2, 2024, at Midland Hospice in Topeka. Martina was born June 4, 1936 at Vera, Kansas, the youngest child of G. Thomas and Goldie (Davis) Deiter.
She attended grade school at Newbury and graduated from Paxico Rural High School in 1954. On June 4, 1955, she married Paul Hiegert at Sacred Heart Church in Newbury. A devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed taking care of neighbors. For over 40 years, she was the Paxico “Avon Lady”. An active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Sodality, she served as the funeral dinner coordinator for many years and was a fixture along with her cousin, Carmen Hiegert, at the parish Chicken Dinners and Sausage Suppers. She was also the unofficial collector of rummage for the Ladies rummage sales. For over 30 years, she cleaned the church, school, hall and rectory. In later years, she would spend her days cleaning and organizing at the hall.
Marty is survived by her nine children and spouses: Douglas Hiegert (Annette), Newbury, KS; Keith Hiegert, Keene, KS; Gloria Hiegert, Topeka, KS; Mary Jane Hiegert, Topeka, KS; Audry Glotzbach, Maple Hill, KS; Dean Hiegert (Kim), Topeka, KS; Brenda Gosch (Terry), Jefferson City, MO; Wayne Hiegert (Jacque), Silver Lake, KS; Brian Hiegert (Emily), Wichita, KS. She is also survived by one sister, Louise Glotzbach and sisters-in-law, Carmen Hiegert and Mary Deiter and 28 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2019; daughter-in-law, Joann Hiegert (Keith) and son-in-law, Joseph Glotzbach (Audry); also two sisters, Alice in infancy and Liz (Elizabeth) King, her brothers: Jack, Don, Lloyd and Norman.
A visitation will be held on Friday, December 13 from 3:00 - 7:00 pm with a rosary following at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newbury, KS. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2024, also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
